As the Co-Chief Investment Strategist at PNC Financial Services Group, Amanda Agati is responsible for monitoring short-term market fluctuations, while simultaneously analyzing their impact on longer-term trends. Looking for an opportunity to gain new perspectives on industry developments, she chose to attend our Investment Management Workshop.
What initially sparked your interest in the Investment Management Workshop?
As an investment strategist, I need to communicate our market outlook and views on current issues that impact our long-term decision making process. It's very easy to get caught up in the day-to-day movements of the market and focus on what's right in front of you. This program provided a rare opportunity to take a step back and think about these bigger issues.
What did you think of the case study method?
The case study method was interesting because it was so different from traditional teaching methods I was used to when I attended school, which also made it very challenging. Each case study touched on a topical issue, but the answers were not just obvious, black-and-white type of answers. There was always a twist, signaling a much bigger, deeper underlying issue to resolve.
Which topic or case study really stood out to you?
I couldn't pick just one topic—the program hit all of the key issues the industry faces. Investment management is always evolving, and I feel like we're at a pivotal moment in its transformation. This program provided a great opportunity to expand my knowledge on current trends facing the investment industry.
What did you think of the program faculty?
As I expected, the faculty members are brilliant experts in their field. Honestly, I could just sit and listen to them, not just regarding a case study, but about anything they're thinking. This program offered a little taste. I'd love to have more time to pick their brains and get their opinions on other topics as well.
You didn't just learn at HBS—you lived there too. How was that aspect of the program?
The campus is beautiful and the accommodations are great. The whole experience was very well orchestrated, despite the intense schedule. We even made time for fun and social networking!
What was it like learning alongside other leaders in the investment arena?
It was a diverse group in terms of backgrounds and points of view. I found myself exchanging ideas with private equity investors, asset allocators, and large asset owners from across the globe. It was a really nice cross section of our whole industry, making for thoughtful discussions.
How did the networking opportunities contribute to your program experience?
The small group work and discussions were program highlights. It was a success because we bonded well as a group, and we all had something to contribute to the discussions. Because we're from such different backgrounds and areas of the industry, we likely would not have met outside this program, which made it really rewarding.
What would you say to someone who is interested in taking this course?
I highly recommend it. I'd say, "Invest the time and money—it's invaluable." These types of programs don't really exist outside HBS. A lot of the conferences I attend end up being very narrowly focused, and often it's the same people from one particular part of the industry in attendance. This program is unique, not only because it brought together a diverse group of investment management leaders, but also because of the diversity of topics covered. It was a tremendous experience.
