Taking Leadership to a Whole New Level
For Brian Bosserman, technology strategist at Microsoft Corporation, what began with a strategy program grew into a multifaceted and transformative learning experience. After applying to the Strategic IQ program to improve his strategic thinking, Bosserman learned about the Certificate of Management Excellence (CME) at Harvard Business School (HBS) Executive Education. He then completed the Changing the Game and Authentic Leader Development programs to earn the CME. The experience, he says, gave him the knowledge and skills to expand his company’s growth and enhance his career prospects.
What drew you to HBS Executive Education?
I was looking for a way to enhance my career while learning about the strategies that create smarter corporations. I've always wanted to go to Harvard, but I never had the opportunity until I found the Strategic IQ program. I knew I should go for it.
Why did you develop an interest in the Certificate of Management Excellence?
During the Strategic IQ program, I spoke with a member of the Program Advisory team about other programs, including comprehensive leadership programs. I knew I was interested in coming back to HBS, but I was unsure of how much time I could commit. Two months later, I received an email about the HBS Certificate of Management Excellence. I learned that I could earn the certificate by completing two more programs, so I immediately began reviewing my options—and chose Changing the Game and Authentic Leader Development.
Can you share an insight that has stayed with you from each program?
In Strategic IQ, the most important takeaway was that having a great strategy is not enough. You also need a structure that extends the strategy across the organization, and smart people who can implement the strategy from top to bottom.
In Changing the Game, I learned how to work through very difficult situations—how to avoid walking away when possible, but also how to recognize when it makes sense to walk away. The key to successful negotiations is understanding the importance of decision-making throughout the process, from preparing for the negotiation to reaching an agreement that creates real value for both sides. It's important to view the other side of the negotiation table as your partner.
Authentic Leader Development was a very different experience from the other two programs, primarily because of the leadership development groups. We spent a lot of time in those groups, and I got to know people from different parts of the world with unique life stories, challenges, businesses, and cultures. To me, the amazing thing was discovering that fundamental leadership principles transcend all of these differences. I learned a great deal about being an authentic leader and finding my sweet spot—and realized that self-discovery and uncovering a purpose really is what makes a great leader.
How did you maximize the value of your learning experience?
For each program, I read at least one of the books written by the program faculty chair, as well as all HBS-recommended reading before I arrived, which helped me feel prepared. I considered these programs big investments, and I wanted to maximize them. Overall, the quality of the facilities, the professors, and the curriculum were first-class, so I consider the experience a great investment of time and money.
How did you take advantage of the immersive learning environment?
During each program, I made learning my priority; my colleagues at Microsoft knew that I wouldn't be available via email. I thought it was essential to take a break from everything and really focus on learning. Taking the time to be in that environment was critically important. Videos and online lectures can be valuable, but they are nowhere near as impactful and engaging as being face-to-face with HBS professors.
Did anything about your experience surprise you?
When I first arrived on campus, my expectations were exceeded in just about every way. The facilities, the people, the food, the way they treated me with such respect—I just thought it was absolutely fabulous.
What return on investment have you seen so far?
The immediate return has been gaining respect from the Microsoft colleagues, customers, and partners I work with every day. I know that the network I built will benefit me in the years to come. It was amazing to spend time with the other participants. These are people I would never have met if I hadn't come to HBS.
Do you have any other thoughts you want to share?
I imagine a lot of people don't apply to HBS Executive Education programs because they believe they won't be accepted. They question whether it's even worth the time to fill out the application. To be honest, I was one of those people, but I want to encourage people to apply if they're interested, and not to worry about acceptance. The programs are such a great opportunity and experience that the application is well worth the time and effort.
