As Group CEO of TBR Global Chauffeuring, Craig Chambers is driven to fulfill the company's mission—to continuously raise the industry standard across the world. He understands that this ambition requires him to invest in his own leadership capabilities. That's why he attended Authentic Leader Development (ALD) at Harvard Business School (HBS) Executive Education, where he discovered that leadership is not only professional but also personal. He shares some highlights from his experience.

How did you hear about this program, and why did you choose to apply?

I previously attended HBS for the Global Strategic Management (GSM) program, so I was aware of the varied range of programs offered. This particular program appealed to me because it felt like a natural progression—from focusing on my management style to developing myself as a true leader by exploring my personal strengths, weaknesses, and passions.

What surprised you most about the experience?

This was a hugely self-reflective experience. It challenged me to really look at who I am as a person, rather than what I am as a chief executive. I wasn't expecting to be asked to revisit difficult moments from my life, but now I appreciate how important that was. This was a difficult process to go through, but it was made easier by the environment HBS created and the six others I was fortunate enough to be teamed with in my living group. In the end, this program helped me find my true purpose and learn how to use my experiences to positively shape my life today and in the future.

How has this program influenced your approach to leadership?

My experience in the program made me more self-aware and unafraid to show vulnerabilities. We are all human beings with our own set of strengths and weaknesses, and we should feel assured enough to share these equally. The ability to express empathy is a hugely beneficial quality in all walks of life—not just in business—and it is important to also encourage those around you to share it generously. I also learned that success and happiness are not linear, with challenges and difficult times popping up along the way. I understand now that how I approach these challenges ultimately defines me as a person and leader.

How did this program compare to or build on your previous experience in GSM?

Both programs had a huge influence on me. Although they share some common themes, largely around the benefits of taking a collaborative approach in business, GSM is theory-based, centered around learning from exemplary business case studies and forming a strategic mindset. ALD, on the other hand, challenges you to look at yourself as a person rather than as a manager. It encourages you to discover that sweet spot between what you’re good at, what other people perceive you to be good at, and where your passions truly lie. Once you can pinpoint that sweet spot, the possibilities are limitless.

How would you describe the program's value to someone who is considering it?

I found the whole experience to be invaluable. I now have a fresh and enhanced outlook on life. I believe this program improved me as an individual today and will continue to improve me as I progress through life. I wholeheartedly recommend ALD to anyone—not just business directors or CEOs—who is looking to take control of their life ambitions and enhance their approach to leadership. Overall, this was an enlightening and life-changing experience.

What advice would you give to future participants for getting the most out of the experience?

That's simple: Throw yourself into it wholeheartedly. To maximize your time and truly make the best of this experience, you must leave any preconceptions at the door and be open and willing to engage fully within your leadership development group.
