Creating Value Through Leadership Development
When he became deputy secretary-general of Olayan Financing Company, Amr Habis wanted to be more than a good leader. He wanted to be exceptional. That's why he applied to our Senior Executive Leadership Program—Middle East (SELPME). While on the Harvard Business School (HBS) campus for the program's first module, Amr shared how the SELPME experience has already accelerated his leadership development—and revealed strategies for developing his team as well.
How did you hear about the program?
When I was attending another HBS program, one of my fellow participants introduced me to SELPME. I explored the program a bit and knew I needed to be part of it.
What are your goals for the program?
My personal goal is to explore who am I as a leader and as an individual. Professionally, I want to be part of disruptive, positive change. On my last birthday, I promised myself that I would contribute more to society—that's an important goal for me. I also want to create value for my company. I believe SELPME is going to prove valuable in helping me fulfill these goals.
How has the case study method influenced your experience?
The case studies have enhanced my ability to zoom in and out when looking at different business paradigms. I no longer feel limited to one perspective. They've also helped me adapt strategies to my region.
What's it like learning alongside diverse peers from all over the region?
Collaborating with so many different people has forced me out of my comfort zone—but I think we all learn more when that happens. I've been exposed to so many diverse perspectives; it's really opened my eyes to new possibilities.
What's something from SELPME that you want to bring back to your company?
In Saudi Arabia, we are in the midst of an economic downturn. So one of our goals is to attract and retain more talent. The program has showed me that it's not just about finding talent; we also need to develop our employees. The more we send people to development opportunities, like SELPME, the more benefit they bring back to the company. So, it's crucially important to give our team opportunities to explore different perspectives and strategies.
What program topics have been particularly helpful?
Through the first module, I've already gained valuable strategies for driving growth in my region's unique economy. I've also learned that by looking at the big picture, I can more easily identify a challenge's root causes and discover solutions.
What would you tell someone who’s considering SELPME?
Absolutely go for it. It's brilliant. From the living groups to the program structure to the coaching, everything has exceeded my expectations in great ways. I feel very lucky to be involved in this program.
