Lucy Song was searching for an executive education program that would accelerate her career progression. However, as an accomplished leader, she wanted to be sure that the program she chose would be challenging for someone with her level of experience. While exploring her options, Lucy discovered the right fit in our Senior Executive Leadership Program—China (SELPCH). During the program’s fourth module on the HBS campus, she shared how attending SELPCH has exceeded her expectations and influenced her business strategy.

How did you come to SELPCH?

The leaders in my company wanted me to pursue executive education, but they let me choose which program to attend. I did a lot of research, spoke with people who had attended different programs, and ultimately decided that SELPCH was the best choice for me.

Did you have any hesitations when you applied?

I was a little worried about the program content. Those who attend SELPCH are very experienced and have already achieved high levels of success in their careers. I wondered if the faculty would have enough to share with us to make the program worthwhile. After the first session, I was completely sold. The program is an extraordinary experience—and yes, completely worthwhile.

How did you find the workload?

Everyone who attends SELPCH has significant work responsibilities, so balancing them, along with the program requirements, can be challenging. But, you make it work. You find ways to balance your priorities work, home, and the program.

Additionally, it was very important for me to be transparent, respectful, and honest with my family. My son, who is 9 years old, was very supportive. Sometimes he would want to spend time with me and I would have to explain that I needed to prepare for a case study. He would say, "I don't want you to fail the class. You should go study!" He is very proud that I was able to complete this program.

What did you think of the faculty?

They're quite extraordinary. It's amazing to see how much effort the faculty team, led by Felix Oberholzer-Gee, puts into making the program successful. The modules, the curriculum, the case studies—they were all very fruitful. HBS has created a culture where everybody—students and faculty alike—works hard. The feedback we received from the faculty was also very good.

What was your most memorable moment during SELPCH?

Toward the end of the program, I was sick and had to stay in bed for two days. My classmates took turns visiting me. They would share their notes and give me summaries of each session. I was so touched because the people in the program are all very successful leaders, but they are also good people. If you want to be successful in your leadership, in your career, you have to be a human being first. When I needed help, they all went above and beyond. I think the collaborative environment at HBS brings out the best in people.

Do you think you'll keep in touch with members of your cohort?

Definitely. I believe some of them are going to be lifelong friends. In the future, I expect to share a lot of discussions about work and life.

How did the program influence your business strategy?

The case studies covered a wide range of topics, from management and governance to innovation and financial politics. It exposed me to a number of ideas that I am already incorporating into our strategic plan for the next three years. It won't happen overnight, but I think we will see an impact over the next six to twelve months.
