Leading Growth At All Levels
As the founder and CEO of Mongol TV—and chairwoman of the Mongolian Media Council—Nomin Chinbat is dedicated to driving quality across Mongolia's entertainment industry. To gain the leadership skills she needed to leverage new opportunities for growth, Nomin chose to attend the Owner/President Management (OPM) program at Harvard Business School (HBS) Executive Education. After graduating from the multi-year program, Nomin shared how the experience transformed her as a leader and completely changed the way she views her business.
What brought you to OPM?
After attending the Families in Business program at HBS in 2015, I wanted to further expand my leadership and entrepreneurial skills. I searched for a program that fit those goals and discovered OPM. During my time there, I developed tremendously as a leader. OPM helped me realize that I was working in my business, not on my business, which completely shifted the way I view my work and lead my team.
How has OPM changed your goals as a leader and a business owner?
Since attending OPM, I've become more focused on our company's core values and business strategy. The program helped me to develop my business in a speed and manner that aligns with my personal vision. Throughout my OPM experience, I worked closely with my team to improve our overarching strategy. We're currently building new operational processes brick by brick to increase our resiliency. We now have a game plan that our entire team understands and supports, which has made the implementation process much smoother.
Have you changed your business model in any way as a result of what you learned at OPM?
Yes. We used to be a B2B business that was very dependent on a few clients. Now we're marketing to our end users directly. In order to change my approach to the business, I had to examine what we're good at and, more important, align that competitive advantage with our business strategy. As a result, we've been able to create a more systematic approach to our decision-making.
How has OPM helped you to encourage entrepreneurship and innovation across your organization?
OPM helped me embrace a mentorship-based leadership style. I want to create an environment where our leaders empower employees at every level to take a shot at improving our organization.
What was it like learning alongside so many diverse leaders from around the world?
The entire program is designed to promote inclusivity, from the living group arrangements to the fun social events. During class discussions, you interact with and learn from others in your cohort. These elements made me feel truly included.
Did the program provide you with any personal takeaways?
Yes. As a business owner, it's so easy to focus on succeeding—or sometimes just surviving. You forget what you’ve achieved and how blessed you are. OPM gave me the opportunity to reevaluate my perspective.
