Improving Health Care on a Global Scale
Lisa Molsbee, Director of Cardiology at ProHealth Care, is committed to improving health care around the world — not just within her organization. To enhance her knowledge and gain broader insights, she enrolled in HBS's Managing Health Care Delivery program. There she found a group of elite industry executives with diverse backgrounds but similar goals, who were led by accomplished faculty to think differently about health care. She discusses her experience in the program.
What was your primary motivation for attending Managing Health Care Delivery?
This program was brought to my attention by a colleague at a partner organization and came highly recommended. I could not pass up the opportunity to participate in this world-renowned leadership program. It was the opportunity of a lifetime.
Did you take away anything that you can apply to your work?
Regardless of our differences in culture, ethnicity, and global location, everyone in the class seemed to face similar challenges in each of our disciplines. This was a great opportunity to see my own health care delivery challenges from many different perspectives and really think outside the box to elicit much more creative solutions to the work in our organization. And because of the new connections I've made through this course, I now have a broader network for comparing approaches to similar problems.
Did you experience any "aha" moments?
I was simultaneously surprised and pleased by the willingness of participants to focus their talents and resources to help others. Far beyond the work being done in our own organizations, all of us were committed to the broader goal of making a significant impact on global health care needs and issues.
What was the most rewarding aspect of the program?
The case-based discussions were my favorite part of the program. The group participation in the discussions and the leadership from the faculty were particularly rewarding. Also, I enjoyed the fact that the living groups rotated each module and that there was an opportunity to meet and get to know new people each time. The discussion groups in the morning and afternoon were a great way to prepare for our initial classroom discussion and hear other perspectives on the case.
What would you say to someone who is considering the program?
This program offered the invaluable opportunity to have substantive face-to-face interactions and conversations that resulted in real-time solutions to current and future issues. And it enabled me to expand my global network of individuals who are all looking to make a difference in the health of our patients.
