As vice president of Kimco Realty Corporation, Carmen Decker decided to come to Harvard Business School (HBS) Executive Education and attend the Program for Leadership Development (PLD). Decker explains how the program had a lifelong impact and helped her to meet goals – both personal and professional.

Looking back on your PLD experience, which aspects stand out for you?

As I reflect on my PLD experience, a handful of aspects stand out. First and foremost, the faculty and staff were passionate in helping each member of the PLD community meet their goals—both professionally and personally. Second, the living group experience provided me with a great deal of support and guidance. By working so closely as a group, our bond and trust developed quickly, and I now have a network of professionals around the world that I can go to anytime for advice, direction, or even just a good laugh.

What was your favorite part of the program?

I have many great memories, but my favorite part of the program was the day our group work involved sharing our life path. The experience was uncomfortable for most and almost unbearable for others, especially as we had all just met. That evening, we decided to sit together in our living area and spend the time getting to know each other, discussing our cultural similarities and differences, and asking questions—even the difficult ones—in hopes of better understanding each person's journey and motivations. At the end of that night, there were a few heated debates as well as some awkward tears, but more importantly, we had a deeper understanding and compassion for each member of the living group. Despite our differences, we all became lifelong friends.

How did PLD change you as a leader? And how has your mindset changed post-program?

My leadership style and mindset have evolved as result of the program. I am a better listener and communicator and a more confident mentor. The program helped me to be more thoughtful about creating and maintaining a team-oriented environment that encourages new ideas and innovations, respects individual value, and pushes the team towards positive results. When something isn't working, I am more apt to pause and take apart the pieces with trusted stakeholders in order to find a new way to approach our goals. As a result, my team is happier, more productive, and deeply invested in the success of our regional team and the entire organization.

In your opinion, what is the value of coming to a program like PLD?

The greatest value of attending a program like PLD is taking the time for deep reflection and growth. Life moves quickly, and as a result, we rarely have an opportunity to step away from the day-to-day, reflect, and open ourselves to self-improvement. We came to this program as successful professionals in our respective fields but were forced to examine our leadership skills at a deeper level, share our experiences, and learn from our peers in a way that is unparalleled to any professional learning experience I have had.

Do you think your organization benefited from sending you to PLD?

My company definitely benefited by supporting me in my PLD journey. I have an increased focus on how my leadership style impacts the success of my team and the organization, and I was able to update my skills in accounting, business ethics, and other important areas of focus. Before I started PLD, I was feeling professionally stagnant but came out on the other side revitalized and more dedicated having harnessed new tools for growth and success. Through networking, I was able to meet industry peers in complimentary disciplines that have strengthened my global network. Last month I received a call from another HBS alum looking for insight into the shopping center investment market in the Pacific Northwest. We shared our experiences and expertise comfortably without ever having met in person. This is a significant benefit in my industry where accurate information is important yet often changing and difficult to find.

What advice would you give a colleague who is considering attending PLD?

Last year, I recommended the program to a colleague who attended and loved her experience as well. Attending PLD is a great way to sharpen your skills and network with an exceptional group of international professionals. It is an outstanding alternative to an Executive MBA. The faculty and staff are first class, the coaching is invaluable, and the class content is relatable and relevant across all industries. I would do it again in a heartbeat!
