Master New Skills in Management
Heba Elshalakany already had an MBA, but she wanted more. When it came to professional development, the senior manager of trade and working capital for Barclays Bank Egypt was looking for a learning opportunity that could accommodate her background and meet her specific managerial goals. She found it at Harvard Business School (HBS) Executive Education, where she earned the Certificate of Management Excellence (CME) after completing the Changing the Game, Strategic IQ, and Authentic Leader Development programs.
Why did you decide to apply for the CME?
Since I already have an MBA, I wanted a professional development opportunity that focused on improving my managerial skills as opposed to my technical skills. I believe my choice was a perfect fit. Through CME, I was able to focus on the programs that covered the major questions I ask myself every day but can't always answer.
What key insights did you gain from the HBS programs you attended?
I now think of negotiation as an art you have to master. Over the years, I've engaged in many negotiations with clients, and I believe that taking a structured approach to framing your pitch and developing questions makes these negotiations more efficient and effective.
Did you find it valuable to disconnect from work and attend the programs on campus?
It was very beneficial. For example, my peers and I were able to continue discussions or debates after class, which led to many interesting conversations. It was enriching to hear different opinions and see how people from diverse cultures approach the same situations in a different manner.
In general, because my work is so fast paced, it doesn't allow for much time to think and reflect. Being disconnected from work allowed me to devote my attention to the program, instead of feeling like I had to divide my time between work and learning. Having the time to reflect, become absorbed in the discussions, and ask questions was really important to me.
How have the programs prepared you to tackle challenges at work?
I am equipped with better tools for managing challenges. I am now more adaptable to change; I've learned to embrace it rather than resent it. My industry is very dynamic, and learning how to adapt quickly to market changes is very important.
How would you describe the value of CME and the programs you attended?
Some of the programs were life changing—not only on a professional level but also on a personal level. HBS programs enhance your skills as well as help you discover your purpose, think outside the box, and explore your abilities. They help you to realize that certain skills have to be learned and acquired; they’re not innate gifts. They teach you how to be authentic.
