This program offers tremendous opportunity.

When Augustine Banda joined MultiChioce, Africa's leading entertainment company, he knew that taking on this bigger role—at a bigger company—required accelerating his leadership development to scale with the organization's size. To gain the skills and strategies he needed to lead effectively in a fast-paced environment, he applied to our Senior Executive Program—Africa (SEPA). Now taking part in the program's final module, Augustine shared how the learning experience has helped him successfully transition into his new role—while staying true to his values.

You accepted a new role shortly before attending SEPA. What are your responsibilities?

As general manager, I'm responsible for operations within the country. I play a strategic role in ensuring that we deliver high-quality services on a large scale across our region.

How did you hear about this program?

One of my friends from high school attended SEPA. He had just started a new position at a large company, and the program helped him settle into the role very quickly. That resonated with me, because I worked for a much smaller business before moving to MultiChoice and found the transition quite overwhelming. When I heard about my friend's experience, I began considering the program for myself.

What do you think of the case study method?

The lectures are so practical and full of energy—and with the case study method, we aren't speaking hypothetically. The cases provide valuable insights into what could actually happen, good or bad, if we make certain decisions. Ultimately, we're able to learn from other people's mistakes—and their successes. I've gained a lot through this approach.

How have the program faculty contributed to your experience?

I've really enjoyed the faculty—they are very helpful. Even when we aren't face-to-face, they're always willing to provide additional help as needed. And we’ve been able to build a rapport and establish friendships. Between the faculty and participants, I really feel that I’m part of something special.

Have you made any changes in your organization since attending SEPA?

Definitely. I initially found my role at MultiChoice quite difficult—suddenly I was responsible for an organization that stretched across the country. SEPA has been very valuable in helping me develop my perspectives and purpose as well as gain the tools I need to execute in this new role. Since attending the program, I've created a few new positions, brought in new people, and found new direction. My team is excited about the changes I've been implementing. They're really running with them.

What do you think of the three-module format?

The structure really builds excitement for each module. When we first met, we were all rather nervous. We weren’t quite sure what to expect. But by the time we finished our first module, we were regularly communicating and helping each other. We literally call each other between modules.

What surprised you most about the program?

I was most surprised by Harvard's values, including being honest and full of integrity. These values are something that we discussed constantly. Learning in this type of culture was very important to me. Malawi is in one of the poorest countries in the world, and we see a lot of fraud. When you're working in an environment where corruption and fraud are considered normal, it's good to be in this environment where you’re encouraged to be as ethical as possible. Even when I talk about my challenges, the faculty and other participants encourage me to stay the course and live by these Harvard values. They're more than just words written on a piece of paper—I love that.

What would you tell others who are thinking they want to attend the seminar?

Calling SEPA "good" is an understatement. This program offers tremendous opportunity. I've been working since I was 19, but in the last few months, I've learned more and expanded my vision. I feel more creative. I have new ideas.

In fact, I've already recommended SEPA to my board because it hasn't just helped me, it's helped my organization. As part of the program, I sat down with my team and we tackled big challenges together. The curriculum helped me develop new perspectives on business—and I've been able to share that vision and enthusiasm with my team.
