Faith Huang knows what it takes to transform an organization from a startup to an established national brand. But after more than two decades, she needed strategies that would help her manage her organization's growth. This led her to apply to our Senior Executive Leadership Program—China (SELPCH). On campus for SELPCH's first module, Faith shared her initial thoughts on the program—and her goals for the next three modules.
What initially drew you to SELPCH?
After I graduated from college, I co-founded two companies with my husband. At first, I felt equipped to lead these organizations, but as they grew bigger, I realized that I needed to update my management skills, leadership capabilities, and strategies. After 20 years, I decided it was time to learn and study again. My husband graduated from Harvard Medical School, so when I wanted to enroll in an executive education program, we both agreed that there was only one school I should consider—Harvard Business School (HBS).
What are your personal goals for the program?
I want to expand my leadership abilities to match my organization's growth. We currently employ 16,000 people. Before I came to this program, I was not quite sure how to manage so many employees. We hired professionals and consulting companies to help us, but we were not satisfied with the progress. In SELPCH, I had the opportunity to study cases about companies that have encountered problems similar to my own. Examining the strategies that other organizations have used to solve similar challenges is helping me rethink my own approach.
Have you learned anything that you can take back to your company?
Yes, definitely. Most of the lectures and case studies have been very helpful. In China, I took some classes in which the professor lectured the whole day—we just sat and listened. At HBS, we participated in discussions—engaging in these conversations has helped open my mind to new and different perspectives. I have gained insight into advanced industry trends that I can already apply to my organization.
Are there certain topics that you're looking forward to learning about?
I am excited to discuss human resources, strategy, leadership, and gain additional insights into how new technology is impacting medical services. So far, all the case studies have been very practical, revealing interesting strategies.
Would you recommend this program to other business leaders in your region?
Many of my friends who run large companies in China have asked me if they should attend. I tell them absolutely! I think they will find the program useful. I am very grateful for this experience.
