computer_dell

The computer in your bedroom is a Dell OptiPlex 980 desktop with the following specifications:

  • Intel Core i3 Dual Core Processor
  • 4GB RAM (memory)
  • 160 GB hard drive
  • DVD-CDRW Drive
  • Soundbar speakers
  • 22" Flat Panel Color display
  • Logitech Web Camera with built-in microphone

Your bedroom computer is connected to the Internet via a high speed T3 connection. Through this same network connection, you have access to a Hewlett Packard 4000 series laser printer in your living group lounge. Print jobs from your room are automatically sent to this printer.

The computer in your bedroom is equipped with a Logitech web camera that allows you to make personal video conferencing calls to others via the Internet anywhere in the world. Although the quality of Internet video conferencing is not business quality, these systems do allow you to stay in close touch with your family while you are at HBS.

The following software is installed on your PC within the MS Windows XP operating system:

  • Microsoft Office 2010 - Word, Excel , and PowerPoint
  • Internet Explorer and Firefox
  • Microsoft Outlook 2010 (E-mail client)
  • Real Player and Windows Media Player (for on-line videos)
Power Management

The Computer in your bedroom is configured to switch to low power consumption (sleep) during a set period of inactivity. In this state your computer will appear to be off. To wake your system from this state simply move your mouse or tap any keyboard key. If your system does not wake successfully please contact EETS.

E-mail

If your external E-mail account is POP3 or IMAP compliant, you can easily send and receive E-mail from the computer provided to you by HBS. The Executive Education Technology Services team is happy to assist you in configuring your HBS bedroom computer to send and receive external mail of this nature.

To configure your HBS computer to access an external E-mail account, you need to have the following information with you when you arrive on campus:

  • Your outgoing mail server (SMTP)
  • Your incoming mail server (POP3 or IMAP)
  • Your E-mail address
  • The user name and password for the email account

Please note that there are some cases where a specially configured personal computer may be the only way to receive your external E-mail while here at HBS. For example, if you use a corporate VPN and PPTP to check your E-mail or if you use Exchange server with Microsoft Outlook.

Your company's IT department can help you choose the best solution for accessing your non-HBS E-mail accounts.
