The Participants
  • Senior executives and proven business leaders who are one or two levels from the CEO, and who are identified by their sponsors as key members of the company's top leadership team.
  • Executives with recently acquired or significantly expanded general management responsibilities, as well as senior managers who seek a broader perspective on company operations or who will soon become business-unit, division, or regional leaders.
  • Managers and functional specialists with approximately 10 years of work experience who are outstanding prospects for senior management within their organizations.
The Format
  • Eight intensive weeks on the HBS campus, where participants are afforded the rarest of commodities: uninterrupted time to immerse themselves in the learning process, as they acquire the skills and tools needed to effectively lead their organizations, internally and externally.

    Five modules in total, consisting of:

  • Three off-campus modules that include online courses, strategic leadership assessments that address company-specific challenges, and a web-based community.
  • Two on-campus modules that focus on diagnosis, action, and leadership; each is three to four weeks in duration.

    Four modules in total, consisting of:

  • Two off-campus modules that include online courses, business simulations, case studies, leadership assessment tools, and virtual team discussions.
  • Two two-week on-campus modules—the first one focuses on building foundational skills across a variety of functional areas, and the second module emphasizes how these functions interrelate across the enterprise and provide for personal leadership coaching.

  • Leading strategically and ethically, both inside and outside the organization; creating a competitive business position that fosters innovation; building a cohesive enterprise across all organizational levels; effectively communicating the company's strategic vision to key stakeholders; allocating resources throughout the enterprise; successfully managing the organization's business portfolio; as well as developing a personal leadership plan.
  • Examining the critical areas of evaluation and decision making; positioning a business for growth and profitability; acquiring support for business-building resources; forging effective cross-functional teams; leading through periods of growth and turbulence—including globalization and technological change; and implementing value-creating strategies that deliver results.
  • Building core functional skills; understanding how business functions interrelate; developing an integrated approach to business; formulating and implementing business strategies; gaining a broader perspective of results-oriented management; making effective decisions; and developing an individual leadership philosophy.
